How it works

Most of a large PDF is usually its pictures: scanned pages, photos and charts. The app opens the PDF in your browser with pdf-lib and goes through them one by one. A picture with more pixels than its page needs is scaled down, then saved as JPG at the level you chose. If the new picture isn't clearly smaller, the original stays.

Text, fonts, links and forms aren't touched, so the words stay sharp at any zoom and can still be searched. Old versions of edited pages and other leftovers that the document no longer uses aren't copied either. Finally, pdf.js shows you the original and the result side by side, so you can check before you download.

Made for size limits

Email attachments

Fit a scan or a report under the limit of your mail service, without a file-sharing link.

Application forms and government portals

Many portals accept 1 MB or 2 MB at most. Type that size, and your ID, diploma or statement stays on your device.

Scans from your phone

Scanning apps often make very large files. These usually shrink the most.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. Mellokit never uploads your PDF. It is opened and compressed inside your browser on your own phone or computer, and the result is saved straight back to your device. No server ever receives your file.

How do I make a PDF smaller?

Choose your PDF, then pick Light, Balanced or Strong, or type the size you need, such as 2 MB. Press Compress, compare the result with the original on the page, and download it. Your original file isn't changed.

Can I compress a PDF to 1 MB, 2 MB or another exact size?

Choose Target size and type the size. The app tries several settings and keeps the best looking one that fits. If the PDF can't get that small, it says so and shows the smallest size it reached.

Why did my PDF barely get smaller?

Most of a large PDF is usually its pictures, and that is what this tool shrinks. A PDF that is mostly text has little to shrink, and some kinds of picture can't be compressed here: CMYK print images, spot colours, JPEG 2000 and black and white scans stored as JBIG2 or CCITT stay as they are. The app tells you when it can't help, instead of handing you a worse file.

Does compressing lower the quality?

The text stays sharp, because it stays real text. Pictures do lose some quality: they are saved as JPG again and scaled down to the level you choose. Light is hard to notice, Strong can be visible when you zoom in, and you can compare before you download.

Will my text, links and forms still work?

Yes. Text can still be selected and searched, and links, bookmarks and form fields stay. If the PDF has a digital signature, any change makes it show as invalid, and the app warns you about this.

Does it work with password-protected PDFs?

No. Remove the password first, then add it again after compressing if you need it. The app tells you if a PDF is protected.

Does it work offline?

Yes. After your first visit the app is stored in your browser, so you can open it and compress PDFs without an internet connection. You can also install it like an app.

How large a PDF can I compress?

Up to 500 MB. A phone may run out of memory with a very large file, and the app tells you if that happens.

Is it free? Is there a watermark?

It is free, with no watermark, no account and no daily limit.
