Compress GIF without uploading
Make a GIF smaller right in your browser. Lossless mode keeps every frame identical, or pick a size for Discord or email. Nothing is uploaded, and it works offline.

- Free, no watermark
Exactly the same picture and timing. How much it shrinks depends on the file.
Why no upload matters
| Mellokit | Typical online compressor | |
|---|---|---|
| Where your GIF goes | Stays on your device | Uploaded to someone else's server |
| Waiting | No upload, no queue | Upload, queue, then download |
| Quality | Lossless mode, checked frame by frame | Depends on the service |
| Without internet | Works offline | Doesn't work |
| Price | Free, no watermark, no account | Often a watermark, limits or a paid plan |
How it works
Lossless rewrites the GIF more efficiently without changing what you see. Each frame stores only the area that changes from the last one, unchanged pixels inside that area become transparent when that's smaller, identical frames become one longer frame, and unused colours are dropped. The app then decodes its own result and compares every frame and its timing with your original. If anything differs, or the file isn't smaller, you are told and nothing is passed off as an improvement.
Target size starts the same way. If that isn't enough, it makes the least change that reaches your size: fewer colours, a smaller picture and, only if needed, fewer frames, with the time of skipped frames added to the ones that stay so the speed doesn't change.
Made for size limits
Discord files and emoji
Get a GIF under the 10 MB file limit, or make a custom emoji small enough for the 256 KB limit, which usually means a small picture.
Email and chat apps
Large attachments get rejected. Pick the size you need and see what changed before you send it.
Websites and documentation
Lossless mode trims a GIF for a page or a README without changing a single pixel.
Frequently asked questions
Is my GIF uploaded anywhere?
No. Mellokit never uploads your GIF. It is read and compressed inside your browser on your own phone or computer, and the result is saved straight back to your device. No server ever receives your file.
Can a GIF really be compressed without losing quality?
Yes. Lossless mode rewrites the file more efficiently: it stores only the parts of each frame that change, joins identical frames and drops colours that aren't used. The picture and the timing stay exactly the same. The app decodes its own result and compares every frame with your original before offering it.
How much smaller will my GIF get?
It depends on the file. A GIF that was saved without optimisation can shrink a lot. One that has already been optimised may shrink only a little or not at all, and then the app tells you so instead of giving you a file that isn't really smaller. To go further, choose a target size.
How do I get a GIF under a size limit?
Choose a preset or enter a size in MB. The app first tries lossless compression. If that isn't enough, it makes the least change that fits: fewer colours, then a smaller picture, then fewer frames, keeping the same playing speed. It then shows you what changed.
How do I compress a GIF for Discord?
Pick the Discord file preset (10 MB) for sending a GIF in a chat, or the Discord emoji preset (256 KB) for a custom emoji. Check the size Discord asks for when you upload, as limits can differ by account and server.
What if my GIF can't reach the size I chose?
The app gives you the smallest result it could make and says clearly that the target wasn't reached.
Does it keep transparency and looping?
Yes. Transparent areas, frame timing and the number of loops are kept. With a target size, edges of transparent areas can look rougher because the picture is resized.
Does it work offline?
Yes. After your first visit the app is stored in your browser, so you can open it and compress GIFs without an internet connection. You can also install it like an app.
How large a GIF can I compress?
Up to 200 MB and 16 megapixels per frame. Because everything runs on your device, large GIFs need enough free memory, and a phone may run out sooner than a computer. Target sizes take longer because several settings are tried.
Is it free? Is there a watermark?
It is free, with no watermark, no account and no daily limit.
